What Makes You Happy? Who Gives You Joy?

I’ll tell you what makes me happy — my new frother. This newly acquired contraption makes awesome foam for my chai tea.

new frother

. . . and I must say the words on my cup are awesome too:

Perfect foam. Even better day.

For the past week, I’ve been sharing my frothing happiness with everyone who walks through our front door. I want everyone to enjoy a cup of chai with piles of foam and a dabble of cinnamon on top. Two of my friends have gone out and bought a frother this week as a result of enjoying a cup of happiness in our home.

Henry Ward Beecher once said, “The art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things.” Simple things can really bring happiness to me — squishing bubble wrap, clean laundry hanging on the clothesline in our back yard, laughing with my husband, water balloon fights, the sound of Lake Simcoe waves, flannel sheets and forehead kisses to name a few. Charlie Brown’s sister was on the right track when she tasted snowflakes.

happiness is catching snowflakes on your tongue

I’ve been humming Pharrell William’s song, “Happy” for the past couple of weeks and it’s a pretty catchy song. I do experience moments of happiness when I “feel like a room without a roof” — sitting down with a good book and a chai tea with piles of foam floating on top is one of those times — but the feeling is fleeting. That’s the thing . . . happiness is a feeling.

Life interrupts and the good feeling passes. Happiness is like manna in the desert. Enjoy it in all its fullness but know that it won’t last — it’s not meant to last.

Happiness can not be the goal.

Joy is an inside job so it’s portable – it goes with me, to all the places God brings me, despite how I feel. I acknowledge the feelings but I choose the joy. When we choose Jesus, we choose joy, not happiness. In our day-to-day life on this earth, thee are lovely, finite moments of happiness but in Christ, there is stabilizing, infinite joy.
