Patience, Buddy, Patience

A trip to my dentist always turns out to be quite the adventure – I’m wondering if I’m getting out enough!

After my most excellent check-up this morning, I headed out to the parking lot of the medical building, only to find that my car wouldn’t start. For some unknown reason, I left the interior lights on and consequently, the battery was dead.

Not a big deal – a quick call to CAA (Canadian Automobile Association provides roadside assistance) and a twenty minute wait solved the problem.

It’s the parking lot drama that continues to amaze me.

I was minding my own business, waiting for the CAA truck to arrive when I looked through my rear view mirror and caught a glimpse of an older woman carrying a toddler. She was walking through the middle of the parking lot and was oblivious to the big courier service truck coming up behind her.

When the impatient driver put his heavy hand on the horn for a couple of seconds, the lady  jumped. She stopped in her tracks, abruptly turned around and started yelling at the driver.

“MR., I JUST FOUND OUT THAT I HAVE INCURABLE CANCER SO EXCUSE ME FOR NOT——– REALIZING YOU’RE IN SUCH A ——HURRY.”

With that, she broke down in tears.

The driver drove around her and quickly made his way to the exit of the parking lot. He didn’t apologize and he obviously didn’t care.

I ran over to the woman and asked if I could help her. She was very upset and all she could do was nod her head. I brought her back into my cold car and she continued to cry. The little girl sat quietly on her lap.

“Why are people so impatient? she asked. “Everybody has bad days and this one has been the worst for me.”

I took her hand and we sat in silence for a couple of minutes.

When she had calmed down, she thanked me “for being kind,” walked to her car and drove away.

Maybe if we made the simple assumption that we all have battles, we’d be a little gentler to the people we meet – in parking lots and in life.

be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3.12 NIV

  1. What a sad commentary on life today. Thankfully you were there to give her some comfort Diane. I wonder if she knows the Lord…..I am sure, because of your concern and compassion, that she could see the Lord living in you. xo ‘Mrs. B.’
