I came home late one night last week and Chris surprised me with this!

Christmas lights on our house 2013

It was awesome!  There’s something about bright, twinkling lights on a house, right? It’s particularly cool for us because we’re off the main road –  we live on an isolated road that hugs the shoreline of a lake. I just love the feeling of driving down the dark, winding road and across the railroad tracks, in anticipation of enjoying the sudden burst of lights and decorations on the all-year-round houses.

It’s no “The Great Christmas Light Fight” show case house but it’s home, sweet home. I never aspired to lighting up a house so brightly that it could be seen from space but I have to admit that I enjoyed watching this very cool, new reality show on TV early this week. Families compete for $50,000 (too bad the money doesn’t go to a charity of choice!)  It’s over-the-top house and property decorating…but it’s fun.

Let’s face it – everybody loves looking at lights.  I remember the first time that a neighbour decided to go wild one Christmas and he decorated his house to the extreme. When our kids were young, we used to drive around the neighbourhood and look at all the lights but that particular year, I took our kids to see THAT house four times during the Christmas holidays!  Cars slowed down to take it all in and crowds of people were dazzled with the dancing lights and the pounding music. It was amazing and the Christmas spirit radiated in that neighbourhood as we all sang carols, drank hot chocolate and sucked on candy canes that the children were giving out.  No one had a problem with chipping in to help pay for that family’s electricity bill for December!

Lights just make me smile.

Enjoying Christmas lights on the house and in the house and on the tree are a constant reminder that Jesus is the light of the world. I really believe that.  In declaring Himself to be the Light of the world, Jesus was claiming that He is the exclusive source of spiritual light. No other source of spiritual truth is available to mankind. In Him, there is light and glory. In Him, there is illumination of truth and understanding. In him, there is healing and hope.  Those who perceive the true Light will never walk in spiritual darkness.

Jesus is the light of the world

…for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.  Isaiah 60.19b NIV
