How’s That Workin’ For Ya?

Dr. Phil is a TV show that I occasionally tape to watch while I’m working out on the elliptical machine in the morning.  For those of you who don’t know who Dr. Phil is, let me quickly fill you in.  Phillip Calvin McGraw, best known as Dr. Phil, is an American television personality, author, psychologist, and the host of a very popular television show, which debuted in 2002. The title of this blog is one of Dr. Phil’s famous sayings.

I’ve heard Dr. Phil say a couple of great things in the past while – stuff that’s worth tucking in the back of your mind.

Young people have the knowledge to use the computer but not the wisdom.

No question – the younger generation knows an incredible amount about technology. I have this vivid memory of a friend’s two year old twins confidently finding their way around an educational game on the family computer.  These kids knew more then I did at the time! The thing is that those twins have grown up in a home where the parents have not only taught computer skills but also taught and modelled biblical wisdom.

If you have the knowledge, but not the wisdom, spending time online can be down-right dangerous.

My dad used to say, “Don’t ever miss the chance to shut up.”

I’m not an advocate for the words, “shut up” but I do appreciate this quote – to actually look for the opportunity to hold one’s words shows restraint, discipline and once again, wisdom. How often do we feel the need to fill that awkward silence with stark words or seize an opportunity to speak negatively about some one? I’m sure many of our mothers taught us, “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

I’m not sure where Dr. Phil is coming from theologically but “Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice? Proverbs 8.1

Wisdom has a distinct voice.
