Kindred Spirits

I remember watching Anne of Green Gables on TV when I was younger. I loved that show.  Anne spoke of having a kindred spirit.

Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. It’s splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world.  L.M.Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

The Bible doesn’t contain the term “kindred spirit,”  but in Philippians 2.19-21, Paul says of Timothy,”it “for I have no man likeminded.” I recently read that this word, “likeminded” is a combination of two words in Greek – “isos,” which means “equal” and “psuche,” which means soul.  The meaning, therefore, is “of equal soul”  and that’s the same as “kindred spirit.”

Our grandson, Phoenie, found a kindred spirited friend this week and it was marvellous to watch them connect. Phoenie was delighted with how much they had in common.

“He even likes green apple cut up, just like I do!” Phoenie

They thoroughly enjoyed their day…

and letting each other know that they are happy to be friends.

When asked why Phoenie and Brody have become such good friends, Phoenie quickly answered,  “It’s simple, Nana…we do stuff together and even if we’re bored, we’re bored together.”

I appreciate Phoenie’s perspective. It seems that the older we get, the better we become at complicating our friendships. Isn’t friendship grand when you are appreciated and loved, just the way you are? When all the chaff gets blown away, there the two of you still are, laughing and telling stories, enjoying the moment and letting each other know that you are thankful for such a wonderful relationship.

God did not create us to be islands. We need each other and to be blessed with a kindred spirit friendship is truly a gift from He who models love, acceptance, encouragement and authenticity.

Life is richer when you share it with a kindred spirit.
