Big Picture

Three times in the past week, I’ve thought about houses.

This morning, my husband sent me this picture that he saw on  Hurricane Sandy caused this massive invasion of sand in a beach front house. If you click on the link, you’ll see many pictures of houses that have been completely destroyed. Apparently, this superstorm displaced 40,000 New Yorkers from their home but for some reason, this picture really affected me. All this work to build this beautiful home and now, it’s ruined.

Two days ago, we ran into a couple we know, who own a big, beautiful house. They recently decided to sell the house and move closer into town so that they could minister more effectively with youth. I believe their explanation went something like,“It’s a beautiful house but it’s just a house. it’s not going with us when we die. We’ve gotta’ keep it all in perspective. We’ve gotta’ keep our eye on what’s important.

I’ve become increasingly aware of how much I love our little house on the water.  My husband and I have put a lot of money, time, love and effort into renovating this place and I am actually beginning to think that I love this house too much.

Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”  Matthew 8.20 NIV

It’s not about the house, Diane – it’s about the home…and my home is not here.
