Wisdom’s Voice

I took a little ride in the front seat of an ambulance yesterday afternoon.

It all started when I saw three, big, plastic pots on a high shelf in Linda’s garage. The big move to a smaller house happens today so the pots needed to get packed. It was time.

Diane: Those pots need to come down so we can pack them. Where’s your ladder?

Linda: We already packed the ladder.

Diane: OK…no problem…let’s just get a stick and push them off the shelve – we can catch them when they fall.

Ken: yah, that will work.

Linda: (quietly) No, I think it’s too dangerous.  Just leave the pots..we can get them later.

Shelly: No, I think we need to get them now. Go get that long stick and push them to the edge. The four of us can catch the pots.

Linda: (quietly)  I really don’t think it’s a good idea.

Linda reluctantly grabbed the stick and she pushed the pots towards the edge of the shelf.  The four of us stood in a little semi circle in the garage, arms up, waiting for the pots to drop.

None of us knew that someone had put a heavy garden stepping stone in the pots so when the pots tipped, the stone landed on Linda’s head.

The rest of us were fine.

Linda slumped down and went unconscious for a few seconds.

Linda:  ( 20 seconds later ) What happened?

Shelly: There was a garden stone inside the pots and it landed on your head.  You were out for a few seconds.

Linda:  I don’t remember that at all.

The three of us looked at each other and couldn’t help grinning because of Linda’s comment…just a bit. Then we stopped.

Shelly called 911, the ambulance came and the decision was made that I would hitch a ride and stay with Linda at the hospital.

The two of us sat in the Red Zone in Emergency for a while.  A couple of hours later,  Linda was told that she had a slight concussion but she was allowed to go home.

It never occurred to any of us that there would be “more than meets the eye” with those pots.  Such is life – things are seldom what they seem.  Linda was the wise one. We three guilty and impatient stooges were bound and determined to get those pots and we disregarded Linda’s quiet voice.

I was poignantly reminded that wisdom often whispers. It doesn’t have a loud, forceful voice ( or three)

Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wiseProverbs 19:20 NIV

Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Proverbs 4:6-7 NIV

Wisdom rests in the heart of him who has understanding, but what is in the heart of fools is made known. Proverbs 14.33  NKJV

PS. Linda is feeling much better today. She’s been resting and everybody else has done all the moving!

  1. Poor Linda- but I”m glad she is feeling better- it will make a good story someday
