Surprises In The Garden

I take great delight in my garden. I love the fact that everyday brings a surprise.

I love to get up early in the morning and start watering all the vegetables. I get so much joy out of watching the tomato plants sprawl over the sides of the cage and the beet leaves get bigger. The cucumbers are growing very slowly and the beans are thriving as their shoots wind around the strings laced across the garden. I didn’t even plant watermelon seeds and presto – there’s a huge watermelon plant taking over the garden! Crazy!  Turns out that the seeds from last year’s compost have a mind of their own.

I’m sure there is a good life lesson “planted” somewhere in this unexpected fruit growth but I think I’ll just show you a picture of my new friend hiding under the leaves.

Talking about compost, I decided to walk across the train tracks this afternoon, so I could figure out where to dig a compost hole.  I would have done it much earlier (well actually, I would have gotten my son to do it) but CN were very busy replacing all the railway ties this past month so I had to patiently wait until everything was finished.

As I crossed the tracks, I met a skunk and I froze.

He looked at me and I looked at him.

His tail went up and I turned so quickly that I tripped over the tracks and log rolled down the hill, flattened the little garden fence, displaced one of the stakes and landed on one of the cucumber plants.

I don’t know if there’s any hope for that poor cucumber.

The good news is that I didn’t get sprayed. The bad news is that I wrenched my back.

You will never hear me say that life is boring.
