A Wise Man

Simon Whitfield is a 37 year old Canadian triathlete, who will be chasing a third triathlon medal (gold medal in 2000, silver medal in 2008) during his fourth and most likely, final Olympic experience in London.  According to articles that I’ve recently read, he admits that he’s the underdog going into this competition but he’s giving it everything he’s got, including a rather unconventional training program – he’s had to step up his pre-Olympic training to combat a wave of younger elite athletes.  He knows he’s got his work cut out for him.

However, what I really respect about this man is that wisdom has come with age. He’s got a humble and down-to-earth perspective on the upcoming Olympics…and life.

He’s made the main thing the main thing.

If I’m successful, I will be at the park the next day with my two little girls. And if I’m not successful, I will be at the park the next day with my two little girls. They will still be infatuated with pink and dolls. And if I have a shiny medal around my neck, they will probably say, “It kind of looks like the other two. Can we go back to the park now?

Now, THAT’S balance. He’s got a hold of the big picture. I’m sure that this wise outlook on life hasn’t come easily but the important thing is that his life has taught him some good lessons.  It reminds me of the truth that years know what the days do not.

I will definitely be rooting for this guy when the 2012 Olympic Triathlon gets under way – I’ve always been a sucker for the underdog.

Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.
