Summer Is Coming 1

I had to chuckle when I saw this portable cart, bursting with ceramic animal figures, resting on my neighbour’s front lawn.  When you love to garden, putting out the animal figures heralds the advent of summer.

Likewise, when you live on the lake, anticipating summer is all about putting the dock in, (as one of my city – dwelling students once asked me, “What’s a dockin?”)  setting up the water line, cleaning off the water toys and this year, building a shelf for our daughter’s newly acquired SUP board. I know what you’re thinking…..what’s a SUP board? SUP stands for “stand up paddling” – a relatively new but very popular water-sport. Essentially, you stand on a giant surfboard and propel yourself along with a single ended paddle. Just a little trivia here – this sport has a Hawaiian heritage – apparently, it was a way for surfing instructors to manage their large groups of students because standing on the board gave them a higher viewpoint and therefore increased visibility.

Yes, Chris and I can feel summer coming – pulling dandelions, planting tomato seeds, dipping our toes in the lake and me dreading the purchase of a new bathing suit.

A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken.  James Dent
