Gaining Weight Together

I recently had my annual physical examination, which I get once every seven years, and when the nurse weighed me, I was shocked to discover how much stronger the Earth’s gravitational pull has become since 1990.   Dave Barry

I chuckled at the humor and sighed at the truth.

For my husband, the tell-tale moment was when he noticed that all his dress shirts were a bit snug around the middle. For me, it was realizing how many bags of Goodies I’ve consumed during these long winter nights.  Ok…so there hasn’t been a lot of long winter nights but there have been numerous bags of Goodies inhaled, while I’ve been crocheting up a storm in the evenings.

Chris and I knew that it was time to smarten up. We eat well, in terms of healthy foods, but it was definitely time to make three “do-able” changes.

1. No snacking after 8:00 p.m. This was a KILLER to implement but we’ve done a pretty good job this week. We had some popcorn one night (does that count?) and last night, we had a calculated number of pistachios ( a good source of dietary fibre, this in-shell snack slows consumption and the shells are a visual cue that you’ve eaten enough!)  but we’ve stayed strong for five nights so far.

2. Chris is up earlier and exercising at least four mornings/week.  He was a bit grouchy the first morning but has been doing really well since. Exercising is not an issue for me because I have absolutely no trouble jumping onto my bike or the eliptical machine every day for at least an hour. So, I got off easy here.

3. We go for an evening walk together…usually for about 40 minutes. Turns out this is a great time to debrief about our days. Despite the fact that quite often, we both work from home,  we pretty much do our own thing unless we happen to meet up for lunch.  The evening walk connects us…and we don’t talk about weightloss.

We weigh ourselves once/week.  This is where Chris gets off easy. Why is it that men have no trouble with checking out their weight? I have managed to stay far away from those scales all my life so committing to a regular Sunday morning weigh-in was a big step for me.  I suppose when I see the pounds melt a way, I’ll be encouraged.

That’s it – three easy steps.  We figure there’s no use being dogmatic about this because we don’t want to set ourselves up for failure.  We want to fit comfortably into our clothes by the beginning of summer so we’re starting now…and we’re doing it together. Reading labels, watching calories and limiting servings is soo romantic.
